Best time Fine Hard season

July and August run hot in the south, and the coast is crowded. Spring and autumn are more generous to walking and to long dinners.

Season by season

Spring

The most balanced season. Terraces open from mid-April and museum queues have not yet reached summer length.

Summer

July and August are very hot in the south, crowded and expensive on the coast. Early June still works.

Autumn

September and October are the two best months: the sea is still warm, cities breathe, the harvest reaches the table.

Winter

Short days, empty squares, low hotel rates. Venice may have flood weeks; Rome is still good for walking.
