Best time Fine Hard season

Cherry-blossom week is the loveliest time and the most expensive. November’s red leaves are spoken of less, and the walking can feel more open.

Season by season

Spring

Cherry blossom sweeps north from late March to mid-April. Hotels fill months ahead; book early.

Summer

June is the rainy season, July and August are humid and heavy. Festival nights are still a reason to go.

Autumn

November is as good for autumn colour as cherry week is for blossom, with slightly fewer people. October is a safe pick too.

Winter

Dry and cold with clear skies. Snow in Kyoto is rare and beautiful; many places close over New Year week.
